Bring Back Arcade Sports Games
I miss when sports games weren’t so damn serious.
Don’t get me wrong—there’s absolutely a place for realistic sports games and racing simulators. But there was an era where developers seemed to ask a much more important question:
“Yeah, but is it fun?”
And that’s how we got games like NBA Street and SSX.
NBA Street Was Basketball Turned Up to 11
NBA Street wasn’t trying to perfectly recreate an NBA broadcast.
It was basketball with ridiculous dunks, insane moves, street courts, larger-than-life personalities, and a style completely its own.
You could pick it up, play a game, and immediately have fun.
It didn’t need to be realistic.
That was the whole damn point.
SSX Tricky Was Even More Ridiculous
Then there was SSX Tricky.
Realistic snowboarding?
Nah.
Let’s launch someone 50 feet into the air while they perform a trick that would require removing several bones from the human body.
The characters were ridiculous. The courses were ridiculous. The tricks were ridiculous.
And it was fucking awesome.
SSX understood something that I wish more modern sports games remembered:
Sometimes being unrealistic makes a game more fun.
And Yeah, I’m Including NFS Underground
Technically, Need for Speed: Underground isn’t a sports game.
But I’m including it anyway.
Because it had the same philosophy.
Neon lights. Street racing. Ridiculous customization. Giant spoilers. Underglow. Loud music.
You weren’t worrying about whether your tire pressures were accurately simulated.
You were wondering whether putting another completely unnecessary piece of bodywork on your car would make it look cooler.
And the answer was yes.
Always yes.
Bring This Shit Back
I don’t need every sports game to be a simulation.
Give me NBA Street.
Give me SSX.
Give me NFL Blitz.
Give me NFS Underground.
Give me games that exaggerate everything and aren’t afraid to be a little stupid.
Sometimes I don’t want realism.
I just want to grab a controller and have some fucking fun.
Bring back arcade sports games.
